Way to Nakuru - sans Flamingos

Nakuru

Our aim was to reach Nakuru… But on the way you cannot ignore these beautiful sights. From Thika we took the Kiambu route to reach Nakuru highway. It is worth the drive as you pass through the beautiful Tea plantations. The cold wind with hillocks covered in green, you want to stop and take few snaps.

Once you reach the highway, there is a viewpoint with a fast food restaurant. You can see Mount Longonot, a Crater mountain and Lake Naivasha. Beautiful sight if it is not too foggy.

A stopover at Lake Naivasha is worth doing. Just go around to the country club area nice yard and the lake with few hippos.

Just within the outskirts of Nakuru, you can visit a crater mountain called Menangai Crater. It seems like part of a mountain just went down creating a crater in some volcanic activity. It is a nice stopover in Nakuru.

There are various volcanic sights in around this area in Rift valley.

These Flamingos welcome you to the town.

Nakuru  is popular for Flamingos… imagine a lake covered in pink. Not now, the water level has gone up so high even the offices have to be moved to a different location. When water rose, the birds left. It was a little disappointment not to see Flamingos (there are a very few left).

Old office area covered in water.

But there is other wildlife to see including Rhinos. Here are some photos of the wildlife. Most of the wildlife including lions were brought here from other places. This is one of the smallest wildlife sanctuaries in Kenya.

A water buck, pretty majestic.

Zebra Foal - the lines were more lighter.

This guy blocked us for a lot of time until the herd in the background crossed. we had no chance.

One of the number Rhinos in Nakuru.

Impalas - common sight.

They say as per designs - darkness there are couple of variety of Giraffs.

Babboons are in great numbers in the park.

These  Egyptian ducks were a consolation for the Flamingos.
